Modern Revolution

For the past few weeks,protests,agitations,self-immolations,assaults on tourists etc has been rocking Tamil Nadu.These protests has gained an attention all over India.Students have come out in open and are taking part in protests.The pro-Srilankan Tamil groups are fighting for justice.As usual our politicians are making the most of use of this issue.Undoubtedly Tamil Nadu is facing a charged atmosphere.But why?What's the motive of these protesters?Is it to get a separate province or country for Srilankan Tamils?Or to declare Rajapakse a war criminal and hang him?Or to conduct an independent probe on what happened in Srilanka during the 2009 war against LTTE?Or to support the America's resolution against Srilanka?Well each group gives its own demand..

Am seeing status updates in facebook by various page admins supporting the students protests.And even reputed writers like Manushya Puthiran claim the govt was scared of students protests and declared holiday to colleges.The TN govt did the right thing by declaring holidays to colleges.Now we are seeing lot of students coming out in open against the atrocities happening in Srilanka.Where did this 'Tamil feeling' go when the genocide in Lanka was at its peak?Even at that time,the same pro-Tamil groups were shouting against Lankan govt and Indian govt especially.If there is one politician who has never changed his stand on Lankan Tamil issue means, it is Vaiko.He has been shouting all these years against the Sinhalas.

Well,I don't support Mr.Vaiko's views(whether am supporting Vaiko or not is a different question).But people should not say that they were not aware of this issue 4 years ago.And that's why am mentioning Mr.Vaiko's name here.

During the 2009 elections,he campaigned heavily against Congress by keeping the Lankan Tamil issue as the point of discussion.Vaiko is known for his fiery speech.But what happened?Vaiko was defeated in his own constituency(Virudhunagar).The worst part is,someone called Manik Thakur(Congress) was elected as MP from that constituency.I have spoken with some people from Virudhunagar,they said they were not aware of anything about him.To put it simply,people have not even heard his name before elections,but just because he contested in a Congress ticket,he could defeat a star candidate like Vaiko.The point to be noted is,when the genocide was going on full swing in Sri Lanka,here we had elections.Even a layman knows that the Central govt,led by Congress was behind the Sri Lankan govt.But none bothered about it.The DMK+Congress alliance was able to win around 28 MP seats in Tamil Nadu.This clearly proved that the Lankan Tamil problem had little impact on that election.

As far as I know,right to vote is the most significant part of democracy.Only during elections we can punish a govt for all its wrong doings by voting them out of power.But our people didn't vote against Congress+DMK.They all were convinced by Dr.Kalaignar Karunanidhi's  6 hr fast in the marina beach it seems.Now all of a sudden they are protesting/agitating/immolating.I strongly believe there are politicians behind this students protests.I don't know who are those politicians(well,am not supposed to give any names based on assumption in forums).These students didn't come forward when the Mullaiperiyar issue was going on.They didn't protest against the Karnataka govt for not releasing Cauvery water on-time.Because the Cauvery water was not released,TN farmers incurred heavy losses and some even committed suicides(paper news).We are not even bothered about our own problems,but now we are fighting for justice.Unbelievable.

I don't expect the students to come forward and protest against everything.But before going on a strike,people should have a clear knowledge about what should be the outcome of the strike and what are all the possible outcomes.This applies not only to students but also to others.Now can anyone explain me one useful outcome of these protests?The America's resolution has nothing against Srilanka.Instead of forcing the Lankan govt,it merely requests them to take some measures for the upliftment of Tamils and the noble Srilankan govt rejected it too.So all the human rights talks has come to an end with that.

Another issue which is creating a huge tension is the assault on tourists.In Tanjore some Buddhist monks were assaulted by the public.And in Egmore one Buddhist monk was beaten severely by the so-called-Tamil-supporters.He says "enga Thamizhangala konnuttu inga varringlaa da?"(after killing Tamilians you people are coming here?).The TN govt and the police should ensure that such non-sense doesn't happen again.First of all we should understand something about the Buddhist monks.If what I heard is to be believed, these monks are behind discriminating Tamils in Srilanka.They control the politics in Srilanka and they are responsible for the genocide carried out by the Lankan govt.And the Buddhists are good in martial arts.They know how to defend themselves.

Sensible people should think - what will be the outcome of assaulting a Buddhist monk?Do we know whether this monk supported genocide?If everyone can show their anger against anyone as they wish,then why do we have something called law?Now that we have assaulted this monk,so what will the other nations do now?They will declare TN as an unsafe place to visit.Investors will think twice before investing in Tamil Nadu.The western media will give an image to TN that Tamilians are violent like how it gave an image that Indians are rapists.In India rapes happen,women needs to be careful - agreed.But are the western countries safe for women?No - they are even worse.But because our media(like TOI),created a sensation out of the Delhi rape case,the western nations exploited it.Same way,these protests and assaults will be exaggerated by the media and TN will be projected in a very bad light in international arena.

In 1991 Rajiv Gandhi was killed by LTTE(allegedly by LTTE).Some people even support his death.Such people should ask - did Rajiv Gandhi's assassination do any good for the Tamil society?After Rajiv Gandhi's assassination,no nation came forward to support LTTE.Right from the beginning some people branded LTTE as a terrorist organization and Rajiv's assassination proved it.Atleast after that incident,people should have realized that violence can never offer a proper solution.Now such assaults(against the monks/SL tourists),if not controlled in the beginning itself,we may even face another disaster.

In Balakumaran's novel 'Udayar',there are references to Buddhist monks.The Buddhist monks brainwashed Raja Raja Cholan's daughter Chandramalli and she was converted to Buddhism.Raja Raja Cholan is a strong supporter of the 'Sanatana Dharma'(Hinduism).He meets his daughter and asks her the reason,for her conversion.She says Buddhists saved her life(through medication) and she was attracted by the principles of Buddha/Buddhism.The Chola king comes out angrily.

His son,Rajendra Chola is an angry young man.When he heard the news of his sister's conversion,he says he will destroy the entire Buddhism.He even gets ready to burn the Buddhist temples.But the great Chola king, Raja Raja Cholan stops him.He advises him not to act in haste.

'Give some donations to the Buddhist temples in Nagapattinam.Never show your anger towards them.But remember this - the Buddhists are attracting people by providing medication.We construct as many hospitals as possible.Our people should learn all the advancements in the field of medicine.Keep giving donations to the Buddhist temples,but make it sure that they(Buddhist monks),doesn't come out of Nagapattinam.Their presence should be restricted to Nagapattinam.We should celebrate all the Hindu festivals in a grand-manner. We should try to unite all the communities of the Hinduism.'

Rajendra Cholan understands his father and realizes making decisions in haste will never yield a long term solution.If you want to win someone,you should form a strategy.

Am not sure to what extent the above incident is true.All I know is Raja Raja Cholan had a daughter called Chandramalli who got converted to Buddhism and rechristened herself as 'Madhevadigal' and later on realized that she was converted by the Buddhist monks to take revenge on her father.Then she even renounced Buddhism and spent her life in Tanjore.The reason for quoting this conversation is to stress the point that acting in haste will never yield a proper solution.

The Lankan Tamils had 2 chances.One chance got spoiled because Prabhakaran was over ambitious.I always felt, Prabhakaran should have accepted for a reasonable political solution,when the LTTE was on driver's seat.But he was too ambitious and finally ended up with nothing.The second chance was during 2009 elections.The DMK should have forced the Central govt to bring a ceasefire in Srilanka.Had the Central govt not pressed the Lankan govt for the ceasefire,DMK should have pulled out of UPA.But unfortunately in a 'spectrum' of confusions,the DMK didn't do that.After almost everything is over,I don't know for what these warriors are fighting.

Instead of doing non-sense like self immolation/going on protests,think peacefully.I would even suggest entering into politics.Nominate a candidate of your choice.Stay united and vote for him.Make it sure that your voice is heard in the Parliament.Next year we or during this year end,we may face Lok Sabha elections. Vote against people who failed to save the Tamil race in Sri Lanka.Instead of supporting the assaults on tourists,its better to think and form a strategy to bring the change which you wish.

And please don't expect anything about comedy shows like recent TESO,DMK withdrawing support to UPA govt etc in this post.This is a serious article.

படித்ததில் பிடித்தது - விடியலைத் தேடி

இந்த படித்ததில் பிடித்தது பகுதியில் வாரமொருமுறை பதிய வேண்டுமென நினைத்திருந்தேன்.ஆனால் நேரம் ஒதுக்க இயலவில்லை.இந்தப் பதிவில் நான் அலச இருக்கும் புத்தகம் 'விடியலைத் தேடி'.இது எழுத்தாளர் ரமணிசந்திரன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய நாவல்.

படிப்பதற்கு முன், பெண் எழுத்தாளர் என்பதால் பெண்களைப் பற்றிய 'புரட்சிகரமான' கருத்துக்கள் ஏதேனும் கூறுவாரோ என்று பயந்தேன்.ஆனால் இவர் வேறு விதமான எழுத்தாளர்.ஆங்கிலத்தில் சொன்னால் இவர் ஒரு 'optimistic writer'.இப்போது விடியலைத் தேடி புறப்படுவோம்.

கதை அனுபமா என்கிற பெண்ணைச் சுற்றி நடக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் தான்.அனுபமா தான் இந்த கதையின் கதாநாயகி.சிறு வயதிலேயே ஒரு விபத்தில் தாய் தந்தையரை இழந்து தவித்த அனுபமாவை வளர்த்த பெருமை அவளுடைய சித்தி தனபாக்கியத்தையும் சித்தப்பாவையுமேச் சேரும்.இந்த தனபாக்கியம் ஒரு தன பைத்தியம்.இவள் அனுபமாவை வளர்க்க முன் வந்ததே கூட அவளுடைய அப்பாவின் ஆயுள் காப்பீட்டுப் பணத்துக்காகத் தான்.இவர்கள் அனுபமாவை ஒரு அடிமை போல நடத்துகிறார்கள்.அனைத்து வேலைகளையும் அனுபமா தான் செய்ய வேண்டும்.செய்யத் தவறினால் அடி,உதை ஏன் சூடு வைக்கவும் கூட சித்தி தயங்க மாட்டாள்.இதையும் சித்தப்பன் கேட்க வக்கில்லாதவன்.அவன் ஒரு பொண்டாட்டி தாசன்.

ஆனால் அனுபமாவோ சாந்தஸ்வரூபி.அனைவரையும் அனுசரித்து செல்லும் குணம் கொண்டவள்.தனபாக்கியமும் அவள் கணவனும் செய்த ஒரே உருப்படியான காரியம் அனுபமாவை படிக்க வைத்தது தான்.இப்படித் தொடங்கும் கதையை வைத்து இதுவும் தொலைகாட்சிகளில் வரும் மெகா தொடர் ரகம் என்று ஒதுக்கிவிடுவீர்களேயானால் நீங்கள் ஒரு சிறப்பான நாவலை ஒதுக்குகிறீர்கள் என்றே அர்த்தம்.சித்தி தன்னை ஒரு மாபெரும் பணக்காரருக்கு இரண்டாந்தாரமாய் மணமுடித்துத் தர முடிவு செய்துவிடுகிறாள்.அனுபமா மறுத்தால் சூடு போட்டுவிடுவேன் என மிரட்டி அடக்கி விடுகிறாள்.நரக வேதனையை சமாளிக்க முடியாமல்,தன்னையே ஒரு ஆறு மாத காலமாய் சுற்றி வந்த ரகுபதி என்பவனோடு,அனுபமா, இரவோடு இரவாக வீட்டை விட்டு ஓடிவிடுகிறாள்.இந்த இருளிலிருந்து விடுபட ரகுபதியுடன் ஒரு புதிய விடியலைத் தேடி புறப்படும் அனுபமா ஏகப்பட்ட திருப்பங்களைச் சந்திக்கிறாள்.அந்தத் திருப்பங்களை ஒருவித படபடப்போடும், விறுவிறுப்பாகவும் சற்று திகிலாகவும் சொல்லி இருக்கிறார் ஆசிரியர்.

அவள் சந்திக்கும் திருப்பங்களில் முக்கியமானது ரகுபதி பெண்களை விற்கும் ஒரு புரோக்கர் என்பது.இந்த ரகுபதிக்கு அந்த மணவாளப் பெருமாளே(சித்தி பார்த்து வைத்த கிழட்டு மாப்பிள்ளை) தேவலையோ என்று நினைக்கும் அளவிற்கு நொந்து போகும் அனுபமா,ஒடிந்து போய் உட்கார்ந்து விடவில்லை. ரகுபதி மற்றும் அவன் கூட்டாளிகளிடமிருந்து அதே லாட்ஜில் தங்கி இருக்கும் ஒருவனின் உதவியால் தப்பி விடுகிறாள்.அவளுக்கு உதவுபவனின் பெயர் தான் வித்யாதரன்.இந்த வித்யாதரன் தான் இந்தக் கதையின் நாயகன். ஆசிரியை வித்தியாதரனின் கதாபாத்திரத்தை மிகச் சிறப்பாகவே அமைத்திருக்கிறார்.

இந்த வித்யாதரன் அனுபமாவிடம் மிகக் கடுமையாக நடந்து கொள்ளும் சம்பவங்களை மிக யதார்த்தமாக வடிவமைத்திருக்கிறார்.ஒரு சில நேரங்களில் 'சே என்ன மனிதன் இவன்.அனுபமா போன்ற ஒரு அப்பாவிப் பெண்ணிடம் இத்தனை கடுமை காட்டுகிறானே' என்று கூட தோன்றியது. ஆனால் அப்பாவிப் பெண்களில் கூட சுயநலவாதிகளும் ஆபத்தானவர்களும்   உண்டு என்பது வித்தியாதரனின் கருத்து.அதில் தவறு காண நமக்கு உரிமை இல்லை.வித்யாதரன் அனுபமாவை அவளுடைய சித்தி சித்தப்பாவிடமிருந்தும் கூட காப்பாற்றுகிறான்.அத்தனையும் ஒரு காரியமாகத்தான்.

இது தான் கதையின் மிக சுவாரஸ்யமான கட்டம்.அனுபமாவை தன காதலியாக நடிக்க வைக்கிறான்.அதற்கு பெரும் பணம் வழங்குவதாகவும் உறுதியளிக்கிறான். இது வெறும் நடிப்பு தான், இப்போது வித்யாதரன் முதலாளி அனுபமா அவனிடம் சம்பளத்திற்கு வேலை பார்ப்பவள். பார்க்கப்போவதோ காதலி வேலை.இவை அனைத்தும் மரணப்படுக்கையில் கிடக்கும் வித்தியாதரனின் தாயாரை மகிழ்விக்கவே. வித்யாதரனும் கூட வெளிநாட்டிலிருந்த பொது அனுராகா என்ற பெண்ணை காதலித்து ஏமாந்து போகிறான்.தன தாயாரின் உடல் நிலையை கவனிப்பதற்காக இந்திய வருமாறு அழைத்த போது,தனக்கு ஆயா வேலை செய்ய விருப்பமில்லை என்று அனுராகா மறுத்துவிடுகிறாள். இதனாலேயே வித்யாதரனுக்கு பெண் வர்கத்தின் மீதே வெறுப்பு.அவனைப் பொறுத்த வரையில் உலகிலேயே ஒரு பெண் தான் போற்றுதளுக்குரியவள். அது அவனுடைய தாயார் சிவகாமி அம்மாள் மட்டுமே. இப்போது அந்த அனுராகாவாகத் தான் நம் அனுபமா நடிக்கப் போகிறாள்.

கதையின் முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரமே இந்த சிவகாமி அம்மாள் தான்.அவர் மிகுந்த புத்தி கூர்மை உடையவர்.எழுந்து உட்காரக் கூட சிரமப்படும் நிலையில் இருக்கும் சிவகாமி அம்மாளைப் பார்க்க வித்யாதரனுக்கு ரொம்பவே சங்கடமாக இருந்தது.சிறு வயதிலிருந்தே தாய் தந்தையரை இழந்த அனுபமாவிற்கோ சிவகாமி அம்மாளை ரொம்பவும் பிடித்து விடுகிறது. தான் சம்பளத்திற்கு நடிக்கிறோம் என்பதை மறந்து அனுபமா சிவகாமி அம்மாளை நேசிக்கத் தொடங்கிவிடுகிறாள்.மற்றபடி வித்யாதரனுக்கும் அனுபமாவிற்கும் எப்போதும் ஏழாம் பொருத்தம் தான்.ஒருவரையொருவர் மட்டம் தட்டி கொள்ளாத நிமிடங்கள் மிகக் குறைவு,அரிதானவை என்று கூட சொல்லலாம்.

கதை இப்படிச் செல்ல,சிவகாமி அம்மாள் பிடிவாதமாக அனுபமாவை வித்யாதரனுக்குத் திருமணம் செய்து வைத்து விடுகிறார்கள்.இதுவும் தற்காலீகமே  என்று நினைத்த அனுபமாவிற்கு மேலும் ஒரு அதிர்ச்சி சிவகாமி உடல் நிலை பூரண குணமடைந்து விடுகிறது.உண்மையைச் சொல்லிவிடலாம் என்றால் அவர் அதிர்ச்சி எதையும் தாங்க மாட்டார் என்று டாக்டர் எச்சரித்தது நினைவிற்கு வந்தது.இதனிடையில் அனுபமா தன்னையும் அறியாமல் வித்யாதறனைக் காதலிக்கத் தொடங்கி விடுகிறாள்.

அனுபமா உல் மனதில் வித்தியாதரனின் மீது ஒரு வித ஈர்ப்பு இருப்பதை இந்த நாடகத்திற்கு அவள் ஒப்புக்கொள்வதற்கு முன்னரே நமக்கு புரிய வைத்துவிடுகிறார் ஆசிரியை.

"உழைப்பில் எந்தவிதக் கேவலமும் இல்லை என்று நினைத்தது மறந்து, இவன் ரசிக்கும் விதமாய்ப் பெருமையுடன் காட்ட அவளது கைகளில் மென்மையோ தூய்மையான வழுவழுப்போ இல்லையே என்று ஏக்கம் பிறந்தது." - இது போன்றதொரு மனநிலையை நான் சில பெண்களிடம் கவனித்திருக்கிறேன். இதை ஏன் குறிப்பிடுகிறேன் என்றால்,கதையில் அத்தனை யதார்த்தம் என்று விளக்கத்தான்.

கதையில் மற்றொரு பகீர் திருப்பம்.அனுபமா வித்யாதரன் மேல் கொண்ட காதலை உணர்ந்து நாணும் வேளையில்  தான்,அவள் யாராக நடிக்க வந்தாளோ  அவளே அங்கு வந்து சேர்ந்து விடுகிறாள்.அனுராகாவின் வருகை அனுபமாவை நிலைகுலையச் செய்கிறது.அனுபமாவை அனுராக பாடாய் படுத்துகிறாள்,வீட்டை விட்டு துரத்தவும் முடிவு செய்கிறாள்.இடையில் காணமல் போன இந்தக் கதையின் கெடுமதியாளன்(villain),ரகுபதி மீண்டும் வருகிறான்.அவனும் அனுபமாவிற்கு தொல்லை கொடுக்கிறான்.இதை எல்லாம் சமாளிக்க வேண்டிய வித்யாதரன் எங்கோ காணமல் போக, சிவகாமி அம்மாள் எப்படி இவற்றைச் சமாளிக்கிறார்?அனுபமா என்ன ஆனாள்? அனுராகா என்பவள் உண்மையில் யார்?அவளுடைய பின்புலம் என்ன? ரகுபதி என்ன ஆகிறான் - இவை அனைத்தும் கதையின் இறுதி அத்தியாயங்களில் சுவாரஸ்யமாகக் கூறப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

அனுபமா அனுராகாவாக மாறி மீண்டும் அனுராகாவாகவே அனுபமாவாகும் காட்சிகளை ஆசிரியை தனக்கே உரிய பாணியில் நகர்த்தியிருக்கிறார்.இந்தக் கதைக்கு ஒரு 'drama touch' இருந்தாலும் கூட,விறுவிறுப்பாக நகர்கிறது.சில வசனங்கள் சுளீரென்று விழுகிறது.

' உன் சித்தி என்றால் உன்னை விட இரு மடங்கு வயது அதிகமிருக்க வேண்டும்.அவளை எதிர்க்க உன் உடம்பில் பலம் இல்லாமல் போவானேன்?திட்டுவாள் கத்துவாள் என்றால் உன்னாலும் அது முடியும் தானே?சுருக்கமாகச் சொல்லப்போனால் நீயும் முதுகெலும்புள்ள மனுஷி தானே?நிமிர்ந்து நிற்பதற்கென்ன?

உன் சித்தியின் சூடுகோலுக்குப் பயந்தா இந்த ரகுபதியுடன் வெளியேறினாய்? ஒன்று இரண்டு சூடு போட்டால் தான் என்ன?அதற்காக இந்த நரகத்திலா விழுவாய்?"  - வித்யாதரன் அனுபமாவிடம் பேசும் வசனங்கள். நாம் அனைவருமே முதுகெலும்பு உள்ளவர்கள் தானே. பிரச்சனைகளைக் கண்டு ஒடுவானேன்?நின்று சமாளிப்பது தானே முறையாகும்.பிரச்சனைகளைக் கண்டு ஓடுவது ஒரு தீர்வாகாது என்பது தான் இந்த வசனத்தின் உள்ளர்த்தம்.

என்னையும் அறியாமல் அனுபமா மீது ஒரு அனுதாபம் ஏற்பட்டது என்பதை மறுக்க இயலாது.வித்யாதரன் மீது சில நேரங்களில் வெறுப்புத் தோன்றினாலும் கூட இந்த வித்தியாதரனின் மனநிலையிலும் நம்மில் பெரும்பாலானோர் சில நாட்களாவது இருந்திருப்போம்.இந்த மனநிலையைக் கடக்காமல் வாழ்வது மிகக் கடினம்.

அனுபமா சித்தியின் கொடுமை தாங்காமல் ஏதோ ஒரு விடியலைத் தேடி ரகுபதி போன்ற காலிப்பையலின் சுயரூபம் தெரியாமல் வீட்டை விட்டு ஓடி விடுகிறாள். ஆனால் இன்று நாட்டில் பல அனுபமாக்கள் கண்ணின் மணியாகக் காக்கும் பெற்றோரை இருளென நினைத்து அரைவேக்காட்டு ரகுபதிகளுடன் பொய்யான விடியலைத் தேடி அலைந்து காலத்தின் ஓட்டத்தில் தொலைந்தே போகிறார்கள்.தங்களுடைய அறியாமையால், தவறான பாதையில் செல்லும் அனுபமாக்களில் சிலரேனும்  இந்தக் கதையைப் படித்து திருந்த வாய்ப்புண்டு.எல்லாப் பெண்களுமே அனுராகாப் போலத்தான் என எண்ணிப் பெண் வர்கத்தை வெறுக்கும் வித்யாதரன்களுக்கு   அனுபமாக்களும் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதையும், ரகுபதி போன்ற ஆண் அரக்கர்களும் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதையும் இந்தக் கதை  உணர வைக்கும்.

இது போல இந்தக் கதையில் பல சுவாரஸ்யமான விஷயங்கள் உள்ளன. நான் மேலே விவரித்தது ஒரு சிறு பகுதியைத் தான்.'Feel Good' வகைக் கதைகளின் பிரியர் நீங்களென்றால்,விடியலைத் தேடி உங்களுக்கான நாவல் என்றே சொல்லலாம்.

The Never-Ending Viswaroopam Controversy

Long back I thought of writing about the DTH controversy surrounding the Kamal Hassan starrer Viswaroopam.But before I started the article,the controversy ended.But that didn't give the much needed relief to Kamal Hassan.As usual our religious groups started protesting against the movie.But this is common.This is not the first time a movie is facing protests by a religious group or casteist forces in Tamil Nadu.Lot of movies like Ore Oru Gramathile(deals with reservation policies),Roja,Bombay etc have faced lot of issues.Ore Oru Gramathile was sorted out in court.But this is the first time(to my knowledge) a movie certified by the censor board has been banned by the govt.

The reason given by the Tamil Nadu govt is that this movie might cause law and order problem. Is it an excuse?Just because a bunch of people doesn't like a movie,does it mean that the movie should be banned? If at all there is going to be a law and order problem,it will be because of some fringe elements.So it is the duty of the govt to provide security for the movie and to punish those who cause law and order problem.But here the govt took the other route and banned the movie.When a govt passes such orders to appease one particular section of the society,that itself will disturb the existing communal harmony.

A small flashback.

"Shah Bano, a 62 year old Muslim woman and mother of five from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was divorced by her husband in 1978. The Muslim family law (marriage, gifts, inheritance, adoption and a few other civil laws are under the purview of personal laws in India - they are different for Christians, Muslims and Hindus) allows the husband to do this and not the wife: the husband just needs to say the word Talaq (meaning divorce) three times before two witnesses for a valid divorce.

Shah Bano, because she had no means to support herself and her children, approached the courts for securing maintenance from her husband. When the case reached the Supreme Court of India, seven years had elapsed. The Supreme Court invoked Section 125 of Code of Criminal Procedure, which applies to everyone regardless of caste, creed, or religion. It ruled that Shah Bano be given maintenance money, similar to alimony.

Some Muslims felt threatened by what they perceived as an encroachment of the Muslim Personal Law, and protested loudly at the judgment. Their spokesmen were Obaidullah Khan Azmi and Syed Shahabuddin. They had formed an organization in 1973 known as the All India Muslim Personal Law Board devoted to upholding what they saw as Muslim Personal Law." - source wiki


Targeting the minority votebank,Mr.Rajiv Gandhi,passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act,which diluted the secular judgement of the Supreme Court.This triggered a huge debate all over India.Later on in 1989,Rajiv ji allowed the 'shilanyas' to be held at the disputed site in Ayodhya.This was seen as a green signal for the construction of Ram temple in the disputed site.This he did to get the Hindu votes.These decisions intensified the Ram Temple Movement and it resulted in the demolition of the mosque. When we start disapproving the law and court to appease a section of society,it will result in disaster.

These Muslim groups which protests against Viswaroopam,Thuppakki etc were quiet when Mr.Owaisi gave that hate speech.When a speech like that cannot disturb the communal harmony,how can a 2 and half hour movie?Mr.Owaisi is a democratically elected MP.I updated a status in facebook when I came to know about the ban on Viswaroopam that "...hereafter every caste/religious groups will demand a special screening of new movies and they may expect some commission from the producers,if the producer fails to give the same,they will approach the govt and the movie will be banned.". Within 2 days,some Hindu outfits protested against Ameer's Aadhi Bhagavan and filed a complaint against the movie.Now they are demanding a special screening of the movie even before it goes to censors.This is going to be the outcome of this ban.The govt has set a very bad example by banning Viswaroopam.And regarding Aadhi Bhagavan,the interesting point is,director Ameer issued a press statement that he can't comment about the ongoing Viswaroopam controversy without watching the movie. And now his movie was targeted.Well,I don't support the Hindu outfits' protests either.It is equally dangerous.


Apart from the protests of Islamic organizations and minority appeasement,there might be other reasons as well. Some people like Pawan Kalyan,Kalaignar Karunanidhi say,the TN govt is targeting Kamal as he didn't give the satellite rights to the channel which the ruling party supports.Some days back, Kamal was present in finance minister Mr.Chidambaram's book release function.There he said something like,someone wearing Dhothi should become Prime Minister.There are rumors doing rounds that only because of these reasons, the Tamil Nadu CM is angry with Kamal.I don't know whether these are the reasons for the ban,but the activities of the state govt gives me a feel that Kamal Hassan is being victimized.All of a sudden the lawyer who argued for govt said,the censor certificate for Viswaroopam was not obtained on legal means and huge corruption is involved in getting censor certificates.If that is true,the govt should have filed a case against censor board,not against the movie.The Madras High court lifted the ban on Viswaroopam after almost 6 hours of argument.The judge watched the movie(which itself is not necessary) and said there is nothing against Muslims in it.After this only he lifted the ban. But within few hours the govt appealed again before another bench and the bench upheld the ban on the movie.In so many theaters the banners were burnt and people who went to watch the movie,were sent back.The police even lathicharged on them.


Even though the court has banned the movie again,I don't find a proper reason to stop the shows which were already started after the first judgement.There is no necessity chase one actor or movie.There are lot of problems the people of Tamil Nadu are facing.Power shortage,water shortage,corruption etc.To be honest,I feel this govt is taking steps to solve these issues and we have to wait to see how successful these steps are going to be.But giving so much of importance to any religious groups may result in law and order problem.And recent incidents like protests infront of the US embassy,protests against Thuppakki and now the big Viswaroopam has shattered the popular belief that Tamil Nadu is the most secular and peaceful state.And the govt's move to ban the movie should be vehemently condemned.This is an assault on freedom of expression.Today it is Kamal and tomorrow it may be anyone else.


P.S. : I have criticized Kamal Hassan on so many occasions and am not a fan of him either,but now he needs the support of sensible people.I am showing my support to him through this blog post.

இந்தத் தலைப்பின் முதல் பதிவு சற்று மங்களகரமாகவே இருக்கட்டுமே என்று தான் தேவதைகளுடன் துவங்குகிறேன்.ஸ்ரீரங்கத்து தேவதைகள் என் மதிப்பிற்குரிய எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதா அவர்கள் எழுதியது.இது கணையாழியில் வாரமொருமுறை என வெளிவந்ததாகக் கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன்(இது செவிவழிச் செய்தி தான்).நீங்கள் இந்தப்  புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்காதவரானால்  தலைப்பைக் கண்டதும் ஒரு முடிவுக்கு வந்திருப்பீர்கள் என நம்புகிறேன். ஏனென்றால் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தின் பெயரை ஒவ்வொரு முறை நண்பர்களிடம் சொல்லும்போதும் ஒவ்வொரு விதமான பதிலைச் சொன்னார்கள். ஆனால் ஒருவர் கூட இது என்ன மாதிரியான புத்தகம் என்று சரியாகச் சொல்லவில்லை.தலைப்பில் தேவதைகள் இருப்பதால் தான் இத்தனை குழப்பம்.சிலர் இது ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தில் இருக்கும் அழகான பெண்களைப் பற்றிய புத்தகம் என்றார்கள்,சிலர் இது ஏதோ பக்திப் புத்தகம் என்றார்கள்.மேலும் சிலர் இது ஒரு விதமான 'பலானா' புத்தகமா என்று கூட கேட்டார்கள்.

சுஜாதா ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தில் படித்து வளர்ந்தவர்.அங்கு தன் வாழ்வில் நடந்த சில சுவையான சம்பவங்களை கற்பனை கலந்து ஸ்ரீரங்கத்து தேவதைகள் என்கிற தலைப்பில் எழுதினார்.இந்த புத்தகத்தில் 14 சிறுகதைகள் உள்ளன.ஒவ்வொன்றும் தன் வாழ்வில் நடந்த சம்பவம் போலத்தான் விவரித்துள்ளார்.கற்பனையும் கலந்தே எழுதியுள்ளதாகக்  குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். தன் வாழ்வில் தான் சந்தித்த சில மனிதர்களைத் தான் இந்தப் புத்தகத்தில் தேவதைகள் எனக் குறிப்பிடுகிறார் .

ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒவ்வொரு விதமான கதை.அனைத்திலும் பொதுவான கதாபாத்திரம் ரங்கராஜன்(சுஜாதா அவர்களின் இயற்பெயர்).கதைகள் அனைத்தும் தான் விவரிப்பது போல எழுதி இருக்கிறார்.இது ஒரு குட்டி சுயசரிதை என்றே கூட சொல்லலாம்.ரங்கராஜனைத் தவிர மற்றொரு கதாபாத்திரமும் பெரும்பாலான கதைகளில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது.அது தான் ஆசிரியர் அவர்கள் தன் நண்பர்களுடன் அரட்டை அடிக்கும் ரங்கு கடை.ரங்கன் இந்தக் கடைவைத்ததே தன் மனைவியின் தொல்லையிலிருந்து தப்பிக்கத்தானாம்.மேலோட்டமாக பார்த்தால் இந்தக் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு பெரும் முக்கியத்துவம் ஏதும் இருப்பதாகத் தெரியாது.ஆனால் இந்த புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கும் பொழுது நானும் கூட ரங்கு கடையில் அரட்டை அடித்ததைப் போலவே உணர்ந்தேன்.

சுஜாதாவின் எழுத்துக்களில் எனக்கு மிகப்பிடித்த அம்சம் என்றால் யதார்த்தம். இந்தப் புத்தகத்திலேயே கூட ராவிரா(ஆர்.விஜயராகவன்), திண்ணா(திருநாராயணன்), வரதன்,கேவி,ரங்கு,கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி போன்ற கதாபாத்திரங்களை யதார்த்ததிற்குச் சிறந்த உதாரணமாகக் கூறலாம். இது போன்ற கதாபாத்திரங்களை நானே கூட சந்தித்ததுண்டு. ராவிரா என்பவர் கெமிஸ்ட்ரி வாத்தியார்.ரங்கு கடையில் பேசும் ஒரு 'intellectual'.மாபெரும் அறிவாளியான அவர், மனைவியின் துரோகத்தால் மரணமடைவது போல அந்தக் கதையின் முடிவு அமைந்திருக்கும்.வரதன் மத்திம வயதினன். வரதனிடம் சிறுவர்களுக்கும்,சிறுவர்களிடம் வரதனுக்கும் ஒரு கவர்ச்சி உண்டு என்று ஆசிரியர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.இப்படி சிலரை நானும் கூட திண்டிவனத்தில் இருந்த போது சந்தித்திருக்கிறேன்.இது போன்ற கதைகளில் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் வாசகர்களின் அருகிலேயே இருப்பது போல உணரவைப்பதே ஒரு கதாசிரியரின் மாபெரும் வெற்றி.

இதில் என்னை மிகவும் பாதித்தக் கதைகள் என்றால், ஏறக்குறைய ஜீனியஸ், பேப்பரில் பேர்,திண்ணா,ராவிரா,காதல் கடிதம்,மறு.இந்தப் புத்தகத்தின் அனைத்துக் கதைகளிலும் முடிவு அத்தனை சிறப்பாக இருக்கும். உதாரணத்திற்கு திண்ணா என்கிற கதை.திண்ணா சிறுவயதில்  பிரபந்தங்களைக் கற்று ராம கிருஷ்ணா மடத்தில் உபன்யாசமெல்லாம் செய்யும் அளவிற்கு வளர்ந்து விடுகிறான்.அவனை எதிர்கால சின்மயானந்தா என்கிற அளவிற்கு வர்ணிக்கிறார்.ஆனால் கதையின் முடிவில் திண்ணா ஒரு புரடக்ஷன மேனேஜராகிறான்."ஜீன்ஸ் அணிந்த பெண்ணுடன் அன்யோன்யமாக ஜோக் அடித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த திண்ணாவின் சாதனையை 'வீழ்ச்சி' என்று என்னால் சொல்ல முடியவில்லை" என முடித்திருப்பார்.

ஏறக்குறைய ஜீனியஸ் தலைப்பு முதற்கொண்டு அனைத்துமே அற்புதம். 'புல்ஸுட் மாப்பிள்ளை' துரைசாமி என்பவர் காற்றில் கடிகாரம் ஓடும் என்றார். சைக்கிள் சக்கரத்தில் ரேடியோ பாடும் என நம்பினார்.இந்த நம்பிக்கையில் ஊரைச் சுற்றி கடனும் வாங்கி நஷ்டமடைகிறார்.அவர் ஏமாற்று வித்தைக்காரர் அல்ல.ஆனால் அவருடைய கண்டுபிடிப்புகள் எதிர்பார்த்த வெற்றியைத் தரவில்லை.விளைவு வீட்டை விற்று விட்டு வெளியூர் சென்று விடுகிறார்.அவர் கண்டுபிடிக்கும் பொருட்களை ஊரில் விற்பனை செய்யும் சேல்ஸ் எக்சிக்யுட்டிவாக அவரிடம் ஆசிரியர் பணியாற்றியதாகக்  குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.கதை நகைச்சுவையாகத் துவங்கினாலும் முடிவு சற்று உருக்கமானதாகவே உணர்கிறேன்.இறுதியில் வீட்டில் உள்ள பொருட்களையெல்லாம்  அள்ளிப் போட்டுக்கொண்டுச் செல்ல லால்குடி மாமா என்பவர் வருகிறார்.அப்போது டெல்லியிலிருந்து திரும்பிய ஆசிரியர் புல்ஸுட் துரைசாமியின் உடல்நிலை சரியில்லை என்பதை அறிகிறார். பிறகு பெட்டி போலக்  கீழே கிடந்த ஒரு பொருளை எடுத்துச்  சாவி கொடுத்துப் பார்க்கிறார்.அது அற்புதமாக டிங் டிங் என்று 'எண்ணி எண்ணிப் பார்க்க மனம் இன்பம் கொண்டாடுதே' பாடியது.

'ஜீனியஸ் சார்' - என்றேன்

'அல்மோஸ்ட் எ ஜீனியஸ்' என்றார் லால்குடி மாமா.

வியப்புடன் மறுபடி சாவி கொடுக்க விரக் என்று அதனுள் இருந்த பாகங்கள் தெறித்து விழுந்தன." - இது தான் ஏறக்குறைய ஜீனியஸ்.

தஞ்சாவூர் அணியுடன் ஆடிய ஒரு கிரிக்கெட் மேட்ச் பற்றி விவரித்திருப்பார். கேவி தான் அந்தக் கதையின் ஹீரோ.93 ரன்கள் எடுத்து தஞ்சாவூர் அணியை வீழ்த்த முக்கியக் காரணமாக இருந்தவர்.சின்னப் பிள்ளைகளுடன் தோற்றதால் தஞ்சாவூர் அணியினர் மறு மேட்சுக்கு அழைத்தார்கள்.

"அந்த மறு மேட்ச் நடக்கவில்லை.எல்லோரும் அதன் பின் சிதறி விட்டோம். சிலர் மணந்து கொண்டோம்.சிலர் இறந்து விட்டோம்.இருபத்தைந்து வருடங்கள் கழித்து சமீபத்தில் ஸ்ரீரங்கம் போயிருந்த போது கேவியைப் பார்த்தேன்.என்னதான் நரைத்த தலையாக இருந்தாலும் கண்களில் பிரகாசம் போகவில்லை.'என்ன இன்னொரு மேட்ச் ஏற்பாடு பண்ணட்டுமா?' என்றான்". நம் வாழ்விலும் இது போன்ற சில கேவிக்களை சந்திக்கத்தான் செய்கிறோம்.இதைப் படிக்கையில் பள்ளி நாட்களில் ஆடிய கிரிக்கெட் மாட்சுகள் தான் என் மனத்திரையில் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தன.

ஆசிரியர் மற்றும் ரங்குவைத்  தவிரவும் இரண்டு கதாபாத்திரங்கள் பெரும்பாலான கதைகளில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன.ஒன்று அவரின் தங்கை வத்சலா,மற்றொன்று அவரின் பாட்டி.வத்சலாவை விடவும் பாட்டி மனதில் நின்று விடுகிறார்.ஆசிரியரை இத்தனை சிறப்பானவராக வளர்த்ததில் பெரும் பங்கு பாட்டிக்கு உண்டென்றால் மிகையாகாது.காதல் கடிதம் என்கிற கதையில் பாட்டியைப் பற்றி ஆசிரியர் குறிப்பிட்ட விதம் அவருக்கு என் மனதில் நீங்காத இடத்தை கொடுத்து விட்டது.கோபாலன் என்கிற ஆசிரியரின்  நண்பன் ஒருவன் மல்லிகா என்ற பெண்ணுக்கு எழுதிய காதல் கடிதத்தைத் தந்திரமாக ஆசிரியர் மூலமாகவே அவளுக்குக் கொடுத்து விடுகிறான்.

அந்தப் பெண் அதைப் படித்து விட்டு ஆசிரியர் தான் எழுதினார் என நினைத்து அவள் தந்தையிடம் சொல்லிவிடுகிறாள்.அந்தப் பெண்ணின் தந்தை ஆசிரியரைப் பற்றிப் புகார் சொல்ல அவரது வீட்டிற்கு வருகிறார். அப்போதுக் கடிதத்தை வாங்கிப் பார்க்கும் பாட்டி வத்சலாவிடம் கேட்டு இது அவர் கையெழுத்து இல்லையெனக் கூறி வந்தவரை அனுப்பிவிடுகிறார். இந்தப் புகாரை நம்பி எங்கே பாட்டி தம் படிப்பையே நிறுத்திவிடுவாளோ என்றுப் பயந்த ஆசிரியர் நிம்மதியடைகிறார்.

"பல வருஷங்கள் கழித்துப் பாட்டி பாபநாசத்தில் இறந்து போவதற்கு முன் பதினைந்து நாள் கோமாவில் படுத்திருந்தபோது இவளைவிட ஒரு நீதிபதி ஒரு மனோதத்துவக்காரி இருக்க முடியுமா என்று அவள் மேல் கண்ணீர் சிந்தினேன்"

அந்த மல்லிகா என்ன ஆனாள் என்றால்,கோபாலனைக் கல்யாணம் செய்து கொண்டு அதே வீட்டில் வசிக்கிறாள்.

இப்படி ஒவ்வொருக் கதையும் ஒவ்வொரு விதம்.இங்கு நானே சில கதைகளின் முடிவை எழுதிவிட்டேன்.நாமும் நம் வாழ்வில் பல தேவதைகளை சந்திக்கிறோம்.பல ரங்கு கடைகளில் அரட்டை அடிக்கிறோம்.சில மல்லிகாக்களிடம் மாட்டிக் கொள்கிறோம்.நம்மில் கூட சிலர் ஏறக்குறைய ஜீனியஸ் தான்.இந்தப் புத்தகத்தை வாசித்துப் பாருங்கள்.உங்கள் வாழ்வில் இருக்கும் தேவதைகளை உணரவும் வாய்ப்புக்கள் உண்டு.

Here comes the English version of 'படித்ததில் பிடித்தது(padithadhil pidithadhu)'.This section is not only to facilitate the non-Tamil readers,but also to share my opinion about some interesting English stories/articles etc.If the post is about Tamil book or Tamil article,first it will be published in Tamil section and then,the translation will be published under this section and vice-versa, if its abut English book or article.

We come across lot of articles/news items/stories etc.Some people are really passionate towards reading.I have seen lot of voracious readers,who used to buy some books,as soon as they reach the stores,something like how Thala fans book the tickets.These guys will buy lot of books and spend sometime everyday on the books they bought.There are also people who hate books like anything.Well,the most common statement given by most of the non-readers is that 'I won't read my Engineering books itself,how do you expect me to read other books..they are out of syllabus'.Anyway,most of the Engineers,will never read their books with interest,that's a different story though.The point is,these guys don't have the much needed patience to read a book.

If you want to read a 100-page novel,you should spare atleast 1 hour,which has become a very difficult task nowadays.And most of them are affected by a new disease - social networking.Well,am also,kind of addicted social networks.But what I meant by disease is,updating everything on the facebook wall.So before reading 2 pages completely,people affected by this disease,will update atleast 10 statuses in their walls.This is why many hates reading books.Lack of patience.Twitter and facebook has more users compared to blogs, because bloggers write relatively lengthy articles whereas in twitter or facebook,the message is too short. So, we can understand that people who hate reading are also interested in knowing information.

If we share information in facebook,within few days it vanishes,but here in blog,we can keep the articles by grouping them under appropriate labels.And also I want to clarify that am not here to inculcate the reading habit to anyone.Whenever we read something good,we would love to share it with people around us. This is the reason for creating this section.Here I am planning to share my opinion about the articles/books I read,I feel that will be much better than just copy-pasting the articles.Am not sure if I can update this section frequently.Anyway let me give a try.

தினமும் பல செய்திகள் நம் கண்ணில் படுகின்றன.நம்மையே அறியாமல் நாம் பல செய்திகளைப்  படித்து விடுவதுண்டு.சிலருக்கு படிப்பதில் பேரார்வம. புத்தகங்களை வாங்கி மலைபோல குவித்து, இரவு பகல் பாராமல் அவற்றைப்  படிப்பதிலேயே முழுக் கவனம் செலுத்துவார்கள்.இவர்கள் ஒரு ரகம்  என்றால்,புத்தகங்களைக் கண்டாலே சில மைல் தூரம் ஓட்டம் பிடிப்பவர்கள் மற்றொரு ரகம்.ஆனால் இந்த இரண்டு பிரிவுகளைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களுக்கும் செய்திகளை அறிந்து கொள்ளும் ஆர்வம் உள்ளுக்குள் இருக்கத் தான் செய்யும்.புத்தகங்களைக் கண்டால் ஓட்டம் பிடிப்பவர்கள் கூறும் பொதுவான ஒரு காரணம்,'பொறுமையின்மை'.ஒரு நூறு பக்க நாவல் படிக்க வேண்டுமென்றால் குறைந்தது ஒரு மணி நேரமாவது செலவிட வேண்டும்.அப்படியே கடும் முயற்சியால் புத்தகத்தைக் கையில் எடுத்து விட்டாலும்,நமது கவனத்தைச் சிதைப்பதற்கெனவே கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்ட facebook,ட்விட்டர் போன்ற சமூக வலைத்தளங்கள் தங்கள் பணியைச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்து விடுகின்றன .

ப்ளாக்(blog) போன்ற சமூக தளங்களைவிடவும் facebookகை உபயோகிப்பவர்களே அதிகம். இதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம், ட்விட்டெரிலொ, facebookகிலோ கருத்துக்கள் சுருக்கமாக பதியப்படுவதே. பல நல்ல தகவல்கள் facebook மூலமாக நம்மை வந்தடைகின்றன.ஆனால் சில தினங்களில் அவை மறைந்து போகின்றன.ப்ளாக்கில்(blog) அப்படி இல்லை. இங்குப்  பதிவுகளைத்  தலைப்புவாரியாகப்  பிரித்து  வைக்கும் வசதி உண்டு. ஆகவே நாம் எப்போதாவது படிக்கும் நல்ல செய்திகளை,சுவையான தகவல்களை  படித்ததுடன் மறந்து விடாமல்,மற்றவர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டால் உபயோகமாக இருக்குமெனத் தோன்றியது. உடனே இந்தப் பதிவை எழுதுகிறேன்.

புத்தகங்களிலோ,செய்தித்தாள்களிலோ,அல்லது இணையதளத்திலோ படித்த செய்திகள், தகவல்களைப் பற்றிய  அடியேனின் கருத்துக்களை இந்தப் பகுதியில் பதிவு செய்வதே, என் நோக்கம்.படித்த கதைகளையோ, கட்டுரைகளையோ அல்லது செய்தியையோ அப்படியே பதிவு செய்வதில் எனக்கு ஆர்வமில்லை.படித்தத் தகவலைப் பற்றியக் கருத்துக்களைப் பதிவு செய்தலென்பது,"Copy+Paste"  செய்வதைக் காட்டிலும் சுவையானதாக இருக்குமென்பது என் நம்பிக்கை.

இங்கு பதிந்து விடுவதால் மட்டும் அனைவரும் படித்துவிடுவார்களா என்ன என்ற கேள்வி இந்தப் பதிவை படிக்கும் ஒன்றிரண்டு வாசகர்கள் மனதில் எழுவது புரிந்துகொள்ளக்கூடியதே.மேலும் இந்தப் பகுதியினை தொடர்ந்து புதுப்பிக்க முடியுமா என்பதைப் பொறுத்திருந்துத் தான் பார்க்க வேண்டும். இருப்பினும் 'பாஸ் என்கிற பாஸ்கரன்' படத்தில் கூறுவதைப் போல, 'விடா முயற்சி விஸ்வரூப வெற்றி' என்ற நினைப்புடன் இந்தப் பதிவைத் துவங்குகிறேன்.

Movies in 2012 - An Experience

2012 has come to an end.Just two more days to go,which means,hereafter there wont be any releases this year.Just wanted to write a blog post on movies released in 2012.

Nanban :

This year started with an ultra-cool movie 'Nanban' - remake of the Hindi classic 3 Idiots.I watched first day night show in 'Chitlapakkam' Varadaraja theater.I love movies based on friendship.Vijay's friends is one of my favorite movies.Without friends,life is nothing :-).

When the cast and crew was announced,lot of people complained that Vijay is worst choice for this movie and he will spoil the classic.Even a section of Vijay fans were not convinced.I strongly believed Vijay is the right choice for the character played by Aamir Khan and Jeeva is the perfect choice for Sarman Joshi's role.I even told this to some of my friends.I had a valid reason to justify Vijay's casting.

The hero's role is somewhat preachy.It is like motivating his friends.If a debutant or an upcoming artiste gives lectures,none will listen to it.And you need an acceptable face to give lectures also.I felt only Ajith or Vijay will be accepted by the audience.But here the hero is a college student,so he has to look physically young too.Thala cannot reduce so much of wait and look so young.But Vijay is slim,so without any doubt people will easily accept him.And the audience were convinced after the movie released.And now don't think am a Vijay fan,am a die-hard Ajith fan.Though I was satisfied with the outcome of the movie,certain aspects of Nanban really disappointed me.Vijay imitated Aamir Khan's mannerisms and expressions(not at all needed, Vijay's casual acting is his biggest plus),Sathyaraj's dialogue delivery was horrible.Shankar should have taken care of these,barring these negatives Nanban is a must watch.

Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi :

A perfect February month movie.I watched it twice in theaters.Earlier,it was released as a short film,but then it was made as a full length cinema.Some people said this is a movie for only youngsters and college students. Well this is a movie for everyone who is young at heart.I have seen lot of such lovers-fights and the director has shown it beautifully on screen.Suresh-Surekha(heroine's parents) love-story is the highlight of the movie.The way Suresh realizes his responsibility and Surekha trusts him completely will give you a good feel for sure.If you have not watched this movie,give a try.This is a must watch movie.

Kahani :

One of the best thrillers in bollywood.In an age where the Khans are selling craps and showing 100 crore profits,here is a movie, without any big hero,which completely depended on its script.Since Vidya Balan became popular in dirty picture,her name was good enough to market the movie.A pregnant woman comes to India,in search of her husband.She is surprised to find another person who resembles her husband and he happens to be a most wanted criminal.Whether she finds her husband or not?Does the criminal gets caught by the police?This is the story.Very simple storyline and the movie has an interesting screenplay.Instead of concentrating on huge sets,the director has given more importance to the script,which is a rarity nowadays. Camerawork was awesome.The cameraman has shown the Kolkata city realistically.

Kalakalappu :

The movie was laugh riot.From the beginning till the end the movie made me laugh.Vimal,Siva,Santhanam, Ilavarasu and Manobala and everyone else were outstanding.Even the dog(google),made its presence felt. Sundar C should understand he is good in directing comedy movies and his serious movies becomes a comedy when he acts as a hero.

Naan E :

A bilingual movie which had Sudip,Nani and Samantha in the lead roles and it was directed by Mr.S S Rajamouli.Its an usual revenge story told in an unusually different way.Here the hero(Nani) after his death,is reborn as a housefly and tortures the Villain Sudip.Sudip's acting was unimaginably brilliant.He had to imagine that a housefly is troubling him and act accordingly,which is a not at all easy.The technical work deserves a special mention.It was all done by Indian animators.Neither the director nor the animators crossed their limits.Great job and hats-off to Nani's cast and crew.One special information,dialogues were penned by one of my favorite writer Mr.Crazy Mohan :-).

Attakathi :

This movie had mixed reviews.A section of people claims this is a very good attempt by the director and another section claims this is one worst movie.But I felt this movie as a good time pass.Written and directed by Pa.Ranjith,the movie has a novel touch in it.Making and the performance of the artistes was too good.Yet again,the hero's character is a reflection of reality.I have seen lot of guys who closely resembled the hero's character.After a long time,this movie had 2 good gana songs(aadi pona aavani and nadukadalula kappala). The director could have come up with a better storyline and gripping screenplay,that's the only negative and otherwise I enjoyed this movie :D.

Sundarapandiyan :

This is the best mass movie this year.This is on the lines of Nadodigal.Again this movie is based on friendship. Sasikumar's character was too good.He has a very good screen-presence.Songs were also enjoyable and Lakshmi Menon has acted well too.Very good entertainer.

Saattai :

One of the least noticed movies this year,which was actually good.Director Anbazhagan has given a real picture of Tamil Nadu government schools and the attitude of teachers.He also criticizes the private schools in a one scene.And the way the adolescent age problems are shown,is commendable.Samudhrakani was brilliant as 'Dhaya sir' and Imman's music is a huge plus for this movie.Adi Rangi rangi and Shreya Ghoshal's Sahayane are the pick of the album.Only negative for this movie is,its too preachy,but still its a must watch.

English Vinglish :

A perfect re-entry for yesteryear dream girl Sridevi.After a long gap,she has acted in a full length feature film and that too in a heroine-oriented subject.Her acting was too natural.Her English class scenes were the highlight of the movie.Every character made its presence felt,I personally enjoyed the Pakistan taxi-driver Salman Khan.A cameo by 'Thala' Ajith(Amitabh ji played this role in the Hindi version) was a real gift for Thala fans.His dialogues about English and purpose of visit received thunderous response in theaters.After a very long time,I enjoyed this feel-good family movie.Z Tamil channel is going to telecast this movie on Jan5th.Don't miss it.

P.S. : I watched a first day show this movie too,as it is a Thala movie for fanatics like me :P.

Pizza :

A rare movie in Tamil cinema.The best part of this movie is,you can't categorize it to one particular genre.You can't say its an entertainer or a thriller or a horror movie.The movie was made on a shoe-string budget,but the settings looked realistic.Vijay Sethupathy carried the movie pretty well.Movies like this are a welcome change for Tamil cinema.

Thuppakki :

This is an engaging action movie.Perfect entertainer for a Diwali.It was good to see Vijay acting in a neat action movie.There were some protests against this movie by the Muslim organizations,which was not acceptable.I wrote an exclusive blog post about the Thuppakki controversy here.Kajal Agarwal and Jayaram's characters had no significance at all and the songs were not appealing(except 'Google Google').But the director made an engaging screenplay,which overshadowed these small negatives.Thuppakki was good enough to watch more than once in theaters.

Neerparavai :

Best movie of the year.Seenu Ramasamy has made an art-film in an enjoyable manner.Songs and background score deserves a special mention.The director should be appreciated for making a movie based on the lifestyle of fishermen.Instead of making it too preachy,director has taken a beautiful lovestory as base. Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom :

Yet another movie to show the maturity of Tamil cinema.This is how movies should be made.There were no unnecessary songs,fight,comedy track etc.The story revolves around 4 friends,Prem,Bagsu,Bajji and Saras. Screenplay was so good that the movie was not boring at any point.Everyone has acted well and my favorite character is that of Bagsu :D.He was a scream guys.If you have not watched this movie,please watch it.Its hilarious.

Neethane En PonVasantham :

This movie was teared into pieces by 'so called intellectuals' like RJ Balaji.The movie was good enough for a one time watch in theaters.People should learn what to expect from the movie based on trailers and stills.On seeing the stills and trailers,we should have expected a slow feel-good love story.Those who were shouting in theaters didn't have any patience at all.It has happened to so many movies.Pokkisham was one such movie. And we have social networking sites like facebook,twitter and orkut etc.Even without watching people starts sharing crap about movies.Everyone has a following in facebook and most of these followers, tend to get carried away by the comments of the person whom they follow.Opinion and expectation differs from person to person,so never criticize a movie without watching it.And most of these facebook users has the habit of sharing one line reviews in their profile and am no exception.I have shared my opinion about lot of movies in my facebook wall.But,there is a difference between sharing our review after watching a movie and watching a movie only for the sake of reviewing.The problem is with the latter.When you watch a movie with a premeditated mind,you will never enjoy the experience.

Coming to the movie,Jeeva and Samantha has acted very well,Samantha was awesome in school scenes.Ilayaraja's music and background music had its class.Rightly,The Hindu reviewed,NEPV is an ode to Ilayaraja.If you have some patience,you can enjoy this movie.NEPV may be your love story.Once again Gautham Menon has proved that he is a master of romantic movies.

I have mentioned about the movies which impressed me.There were also movies which I expected to be good and got disappointed too.They are Aravaan,Thandavam,Kazhugu,Mugamoodi.

Movies like Saguni,Billa2,Maatraan,Kazhugu,3(Moonu),Mugamoodi were boring and had nothing interesting.They were bad.Among these movies,I felt Saguni and 3 as worst movies.

Most of them said Vazhakku En 18/9 was a must watch movie.Unfortunately,due to time constraints I missed it in theaters and I couldn't watch it again(watching movies online is a very difficult task for me).


That's it.2012 had its own share good and bad movies.If you observe carefully,you can find that,movies with different content, received good response from the audience and they were box office hits too,but not all the movies.Serious movies like Neerparavai,Vazhakku En 18/9 etc., were just average in box office.This is a trend which I observed - movies with different theme,if has humor and entertainment content,becomes box office hits and serious movies find it very difficult to survivie in box office.

As a cinema fan,I expect more no.of quality movies in 2013.Already Kamal's Viswaroopam has created huge expectations and its audio is smash hit.And also Power Star's Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaya is all set to break the collections of Avatar :P.Looking forward to it.
